Original Etchings

What are etchings?

An etching is created by covering a metal plate, (either copper or zinc) with an acid resistant layer called a ground and drawing the image required through the ground with a sharp implement. The plate is then dipped into acid, which bites into the exposed area, thus etching the image into the plate. After dipping the plate into the acid, sections of the image can be blocked out using an acid resistant liquid and the plate immersed in the acid once again. This creates a deeper bite, and thus darker lines, to those areas not blocked out.

Etching is an intaglio process, so prints made in this way will have a plate mark. The plate is then covered with ink and excess ink removed leaving the etched area filled with ink. Then under pressure normally applied through a set of parallel rollers, the ink from the etched area is forced up into and onto the paper which has been placed over the inked plate. This then produces the print.
Tonal areas can be added using aquatint techniques. This process is the application of a granular acid resistant ground to the plate before submerging it into the acid. The acid “bites” in and around the granules creating large areas of texture and tone. In order to get varying degrees of tone acid resistant liquid is used to block out areas which are required to be lighter. The longer the metal is exposed to the acid the darker the tone.
